Artboards, Grids, Snaplines and Navajo Rugs - Presentation 2

Navajo Loom-Indian Reservation, Ariz. A giant Mitten Butte stands in Monument Valley, background for a young weaver and her helpers. Their traditional costume and their famous handicraft add to the fascination of this desert scene.
Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, meaning valley of the rocks

Class:
Have you ever seen someone weave?  Would you like to try "weaving" in Adobe Illustrator?

Click here to download the presentation and I will tell you how...

Student sample of Navajo rug design...

Class,

Click on the rug image and take a look how to take on a geometric problem.  Notice that the original rug was used as a guide but that at some point the student went off and used Illustrator to make a geometric design.

He started by making one small piece, then copied and pasted and so on.

Student samples of Zuni pot designs...

Class:

Two of your class mates made these patterns from the Zuni pots using Adobe Illustrator.  Notice how they used the pen tool, and quietly made a pattern that repeats over and over.  This is what we are looking for on the current exercise for one of the groups.

Exercise 4 - Due September 5

Native Art – Vector, Geometry and Symbol

In Adobe Illustrator make 4 drawings on one page.  Choose one design from each of the following 3 groups and copy it as accurately as possible.  Then create a 4th drawing using one of the influences below.

1.  Choose a Haida design to copy.  You will be using mostly the pen tool.

2.  Choose a Navajo rug design, try to use the "grid" option under "view" to help you construct a geometrical pattern similar to the rug.  Use the rug as a guide.

3.  Choose a Zuni pot design and try to copy a piece of the pattern and repeat it across the page.

4.  Make your own design for the 4th drawing -- using what ever style you want.  If you want to make your own in a Haida influence, or your own rug design, or your own pottery motif -- be creative!

Each drawing is worth 25 points.  100 points total.

Monster Madness -- Due August 22

Due August 22 -- 4 Monsters to copy and 1 of your own making.

Today (August 8 for periods 2 and 4, August 9 for periods 1, 3 and 7) I will demonstrate how to get started in Adobe Illustrator with the Monster exercise.

Please be quiet while I show you how to get started and how to make the first monster.  Yes, it will be confusing if you have not used Illustrator before now.  Just watch and listen.

You can download the presentation here.

You should also be able to download the presentation on a shared folder.

Take your time!

Also, use the internet to your advantage by looking up Adobe Illustrator help.

Finally, think about using the animal that you drew in the last exercise as your starting point to making your own monster!

Current assignment: Due August 7 (August 6 for Periods 2,4)

You are to draw 5 logos, 2 buildings and 1 animal from images on the internet.  You are to draw them as accurately as possible.  Next to the image, write down why you chose those logos, buildings and animal.

This is your chance to start practicing "thumbnail" drawings.  Take your time and really use the pencil or pen and make strong and bold lines.

Pay close attention to the logo and see how it might have been conceived.

Due End of Class August 7 (End of class on August 6 for periods 2 and 4).
